Not-For-Profit Foundation Attorneys
Charitable Community Organization Lawyers
Non-Profit Organization Attorneys

With offices in Washington, DC, and Kansas City, Missouri, Copilevitz & Canter, LLC ("C&C") was formed in 1993 by the merger of two law firms with extensive knowledge and experience representing non-profit organizations (NPOs).

The law firm represents more than 200 tax-exempt organizations from start-up (forming a non-profit business entity) through maintaining tax-exempt status and providing general legal counsel. Because we focus our entire legal practice on tax-exempt organizations (including charitable, educational, and religious organizations), our attorneys and legal staff know tax-exemption rules and regulations exceptionally well.

Our NPO law firm's understanding and leadership in tax-exempt status and charitable organization legal matters is demonstrated in a series of articles by C&C partner Mackenzie Canter.

The C&C tax-exempt organization lawyers represent tax-exempt clients including:

colleges and universities  • churches • schools • alumni associations •
health care charities   • research organizations think tanks
 conservation organizations humane societies
developers of housing for low-income families and the elderly
economic development organizations for disadvantaged communities
private foundations community foundations supporting organizations

The 501(c)(3) category also includes publicly supported organizations and private foundations. While most of our non-profit organization clients are publicly supported, some are private foundations subject to special tax laws related to mandatory distributions, excess business holdings, and "self-dealing."

Our attorneys also represent other categories of tax-exempt organizations classified variously as 501(c)(4), 501(c)(5), and 501(c)(6) organizations, such as:

• trade associations • civic action leagues • veterans' organizations •
• police societies • leagues of law enforcement officers •

Our monthly newsletter, Fundraising and Non-Profit Report, features state and federal issues of importance to tax-exempt organizations. If you would like to be on the subscription list - free of charge - send your name and address via e-mail or call us at 202-861-0740.

The experienced NPO attorneys at Copilevitz & Canter, LLC, represent clients nationwide from our offices in Washington, DC, and Kansas City, Missouri. If you are forming a non-profit or if you are concerned about maintaining status as an NPO, call C&C law firm.
